Simple Secrets to Flower Arranging

The Beginner's Guide to the Art of Flower Arranging

Are you wanting to buy flowers for a loved one, or treat yourself to a lovely bunch for your home? Either way, purchasing a beautiful bunch of flowers can be costly. Have you perhaps tried arranging flowers from the comfort of your own home? We know, it sounds daunting, but flower arranging is a simple skill to pick up on, and today we will be sharing a few simple tips and tricks to have you arranging beautiful springtime flowers in no time!

Choose blooms and foliage that may not necessarily go together at first glance. Add some nuts and berries to add texture.

Instead of purchasing an already made bouquet, when it comes to flower arranging, choosing your florals is simple. Go to your local supermarket and pick up any greenery that may catch your eye. Or even better, if you have a garden, gather any greenery that may be growing! Don’t worry about what you’re choosing, as mixing colours, textures and sizes all contributes to making a unique and beautiful bouquet. Choose blooms and foliage that may not necessarily go together at first glance. Add some nuts and berries to add texture. Don’t worry about picking too much also as we have a secret for those unused cuts later.

Before you begin arranging your beautiful florals and greenery, you will need a few simple tools which generally will be laying around your home.

Here’s what you’ll need:

- A vase or anything you’d like to keep your flowers in. Try and be creative with this step as it will help bring your arrangement to life!

- Scissors (preferably floral scissors but kitchen scissors will work too).

- Brown paper or anything you’d like to wrap your flowers in if you're gifting them.

And that’s all you’ll need! No excuses to not be making floral arrangements in your home from now on.

Now that you have all your supplies and your choice of florals and greenery, it’s time to start flower arranging!

Basic tips for flower arranging are as followed:

1. Begin with your foliage! Remove any excess leaves from the bottom of the stems. Start by placing small stems of your greenery around the edge of your vase. Make sure to do this in small bunches so there are no gaps! This also enables the foliage to support each other and create a framework for the arrangement.

2. Next step is to add your textural elements of berries and nuts! These provide a strong base to support the arrangement.

3. Once you have started placing your greenery it is time to start adding your larger florals. Remove the leaves from the bottom of the flower stems and begin by adding in the flowers to the arrangement one at a time. Tip: Don’t push the flowers completely to the bottom of the vase. By gently placing them into the top of the arrangement the flowers spread out, giving volume to the overall shape of the arrangement.

4. You guessed it, now it’s time to add your smaller florals. Just use the same technique and you’ll begin to see your beautiful arrangement come to life.

5. That’s it, you're done! Any gaps you may come across are easily fixed. Simply fill the holes in with greenery. But don’t add too much! You don’t want the arrangement to look too busy.

Complete your bouquet by adding some water if you’re placing them in your home, or wrap them in your paper of choice if gifting them.

As we mentioned before, never waste any greenery or florals you may be left with at the end. If you have enough, make another bouquet! If not enough for a friend, make small arrangements to place around your home! Fresh flowers bring colour and life to any home. Simply adding florals to your kitchen, dining table or windowsill can completely change the atmosphere of a room!
